The concept of "crus" has always had a much higher value in Piedmont than elsewhere in Italy. The crus Sichivej - Belsit has been known for centuries to provide one of the greatest expressions of the Barbera grape. These crus, located on the tuffaceous hills of the western Monferrato near the border of the Langhe, are unmatched in creating Barbera wines of refinement and elegance.
The Bel-Sit estate is comprised of 10 ha of vineyards in the heart of the best terroir for Barbera in Asti. Originally built by Pietro Rivella in 1870, it has remained in the Rivella family for nearly 150 years. It produces Barbera d'Asti DOCG and a beautiful Moscato d'Asti DOCG, all among the highest quality wines of this appellation.
In the ‘60s, Paolo Rivella, nephew of Pietro, began to sell the first bottles of Barbera that was so highly appreciated by local customers. As a matter of fact, the Barbera "Bel Sit" was named after the town, "The Barbera of Castagnole Lanze", even before it was established the Appellation of Origin.
In 2000 the Bel-Sit Estate was re-equipped and renovated by Ezio Rivella, one of the most important Masters of Italian Oenology of the last fifty years. Ezio is widely regarded as the man that introduced Brunello di Montalcino to the world through his development of the Banfi brand. He has since returned to his Piemontese roots to develop his ancestors project, a project made easier by the perfectly situated vineyards of his family estate.
Today the winery is managed by the new generation, driven to constant improvement while adhering to the principles and values of their ancestors. Their goal is to express this land, its history, and the grapes of these exquisite vineyards in the form of beautiful wine.
